Weekend Special: I used to think the answer was always more effort. More hours. More pressure. More control. And for a while, it worked. Until it didn’t (i.e., law of diminishing returns in economics). Projects slowed down. My team waited for direction instead of taking ownership. And I was exhausted, wondering why pushing harder kept giving me less. So, I tried something that felt wrong for a leader. I stopped jumping in. I stopped solving everything. I stopped being the loudest voice in the room. Instead of forcing outcomes, I started questioning assumptions. Instead of reacting faster, I paused long enough to actually listen. Instead of doubling down, I gave people room to figure it out. (This is paradoxical thinking, which I discuss in this video) That shift didn’t just change results. It changed trust. It changed accountability. It changed me. Sometimes the strongest move a leader can make is stepping back.
